blaze burn burning burnt

Sometimes temptations that tend to easily gain my attention feel as though they are burning within me. It’s a fight to resist sometimes! I wrote this poem in response to this experience, but it really weighs in on a deeper reality. That deeper reality is knowing who is at work within me and can be found in Philippians 1.6, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” When I feel discouraged about where my walk is with God, I remember where he has brought me from and the work I see him doing still. May I learn to become more and more faithful to him and to his process of sanctification – the forging of the image of Christ within me.

Yearning and burning in my flesh is this sin,
By his grace, I’m no stranger to the danger I’m in,
With all my might I fight to stay on my feet,
Lord, I don’t want to fall even if all I can do is cleave to your tzitzit,
Father of Lights, I keep my sights fixed on you,
Please give me grace to stay embraced to truth; rid me of this flu,
Please give me peace and cease this burning in my soul,
Holy Spirit, to heed as you lead I desire – my goal –
Continue to mold me into the gold standard of your imagine;
If I fall heeding the call, may I step back to the line of scrimmage.
I’m overwhelmed, as I count the amount of grace you give,
For your kingdom, story and glory, I live!

This also bears one more point of God’s goodness. Jeremiah 20.9 reads, “If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.” It seems God does not shy away from fires in our souls and indeed uses them for our good and his glory. Father, turn all the burnings within me to align with your will and character and be used for your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. in Philippians 1.6, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES EVER! It gives me encouragement for my writing and life!
